Federal Student Loans involve questions about both the borrowing arrangement and its cost. Complete the required aid process and review the award information. Subsidized and unsubsidized loans differ in how interest is handled in qualifying periods. Ask the school to explain the exact loan type, amount and timing shown in the aid offer.

Which federal loan is in my aid offer? Which academic year and disbursement rules apply? What would be lost by refinancing privately? The BorrowCompass guide at federal student loan upfront fees vs ongoing fees helps organize these points. Confirm the current terms with the provider and compare the full repayment obligation. This is educational information, and eligibility depends on the applicable requirements.

Car financing is easier to compare when the purchase price, down payment, loan amount and optional extras are listed separately. Review the APR, term and total repayment alongside the monthly payment. A longer term can leave a balance outstanding for more time. An auto purchase loan has a different purpose from borrowing cash against a vehicle already owned.

A title loan uses an existing vehicle as security for borrowing. It is different from a loan used to purchase a car. Review the charges, repayment deadline and any extension terms. Missed payments can put the vehicle at risk, so consider the effect on transport and work. Verify the provider and applicable state requirements before agreeing to the arrangement.

Home Equity Loans involve questions about both the borrowing arrangement and its cost. Ask how the proposed loan sits alongside your existing mortgage and what costs are involved. Write both payments into the housing budget. Using home equity for a project or consolidation adds a debt secured by your home.

What valuation and equity does the lender use? Can I cover both housing payments? What fees apply before funding or at early closure? The BorrowCompass guide at lump sum home equity loan minimum amount helps organize these points. Confirm the current terms with the provider and compare the full repayment obligation. This is educational information, and eligibility depends on the applicable requirements.

Home Equity Lines of Credit involve questions about both the borrowing arrangement and its cost. Separate the draw period from the repayment period. Ask how the minimum payment is calculated in each phase and whether interest-only payments leave the borrowed balance unchanged. Check what happens when the draw period ends.

When does the draw period end? How is the variable rate calculated? What payment is required in the repayment phase? The BorrowCompass guide at heloc payment vs total cost helps organize these points. Confirm the current terms with the provider and compare the full repayment obligation. This is educational information, and eligibility depends on the applicable requirements.

Mortgage Loans involve questions about both the borrowing arrangement and its cost. Start with the full housing budget, including taxes, insurance and other ownership costs. Compare loan estimates for the same scenario and ask which terms can change. An initial prequalification is not the same as a final closing commitment.

Which loan programs am I eligible for? What is included in the monthly payment? Which closing costs and rate terms can change? The BorrowCompass guide at mortgage loan comparison helps organize these points. Confirm the current terms with the provider and compare the full repayment obligation. A private education loan is governed by the lender agreement. Compare fixed and variable rates, interest during school, repayment timing and any co-signer obligation. If co-signer release is available, read the conditions and application process. Deferred payments do not necessarily stop interest from accruing. Ask about school eligibility and written hardship provisions rather than assuming that federal loan terms apply.

Small Business Loans involve questions about both the borrowing arrangement and its cost. Prepare current financial information and a realistic cash-flow forecast. Ask whether the product requires security, a personal guarantee or a minimum trading history. Keep the business’s obligations separate from assumptions about consumer-loan protections.

What business need will the funds cover? Is a personal guarantee or asset security required? Does the repayment match the business cash cycle? The BorrowCompass guide at how to read a business term loan agreement helps organize these points. Confirm the current terms with the provider and compare the full repayment obligation. Auto & Car Loans involve questions about both the borrowing arrangement and its cost. Compare financing from more than one source where practical. Write down the vehicle’s out-the-door price before focusing on a monthly payment. Ask whether optional products are included and how financing them changes the loan balance.

What is the total financed amount? Which add-ons are optional? How much is still owed if I sell the car early? The BorrowCompass guide at auto loan costs helps organize these points. Confirm the current terms with the provider and compare the full repayment obligation. This is educational information, and eligibility depends on the applicable requirements.

A small borrowing amount can still carry a substantial cost. Compare the money received with the total repayment and check how fixed fees affect a smaller balance. The scheduled payment needs to fit alongside ordinary expenses. Ask about the repayment term, application requirements and any automatic-payment conditions. Borrowing more than the expense requires can add unnecessary repayment pressure.
